Face it, lip color is fast to disappear. In my case, it's sometimes gone before I even leave the house. Here is one of my favorite tips for long lasting lip color.
First, break out your favorite lip exfoliator and have at it. If you don't know what that is, here is a quick freebie –take equal amounts of sugar and Vaseline, mix it well and rub lightly into your lips then tissue it off. This will eliminate excess dead skin and leave your lips feeling smooth and silky.
Apply a skin toned product such as MAC Lip Erase, or even a concealer or foundation to the lips to erase all color from the lips. Extend the lip erase beyond your lip line, which will also serve to highlight the outer part of your lips. This step serves to help create the illusion of larger lips. It will look strange until you've finished your lips, so bear with it!
Next, powder your lips. This step will further enhance the color removal from your lips, soak up the excess moisture from the emollient product you just applied and provide a matte surface.
Now you will need two lip liner pencils. Choose two shades in the same color family, one lighter than the other. Then, run a solid line with the darker colored pencil around your natural lip line. If you want to create the illusion of larger lips, do not go too far outside of the natural line but carefully on the very edges with this color. Also use this pencil to fill in the very edges of the corners of the mouth. Next, use the second shade and fill the lips in with this pencil, carefully blending in with the edges of the darker pencil.
If you want to create a real "pop" take a shimmery complementary pale off white or pink (depending on the lip color you are using) eye shadow and dot a little the center of your bottom lip.
Tip: If you find that the color you are left with is too stark for your liking, take a pressed powder on a cosmetic sponge and carefully pat it to bring down the intensity. Voila, you have the lip color you want with less intensity.
You will be left with a matte finish but it will last all day long. You can create the illusion of shine by patting a little bit of complementary pigment on top. If you want true shine and less wear, add a lip gloss.
